Join the twitter space “Will the Local Council Elections Happen?” hosted by @whatsnextlk on February 19th, Sunday @19.30 Hrs.
Saliya Peiris, President’s Counsel and President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, will speak in the context of Local Government Elections in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has witnessed its worst economic crisis, caused by bad economic policies, mismanagement and corruption. In 2022 the citizens of Sri Lanka took to the streets and kicked out Executive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The aspiration and hopes of many citizens alike were the complete overhall of the current governnace system. A governance system free of corruption where every citizen respects the Rule of Law, every citizen’s Human Right is protected, and all citizens are Equal and able to exercise their Democratic rights!
Today though the country has a new caretaker government, many citizens are cynical. The Rajapaksa regime and rogue ministers are once again slowly emerging.
A glimmer of hope amongst many is the Local Council Elections scheduled for the first quarter of 2023. However, there are strong signs that the current administration of Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe is working hard to delay the election.
On Sunday, February 19th 2023, the What’s Next Sri Lanka Twitter space will weigh in on the Local Council Elections and read the pulse. Guest Speaker, President Counsel Mr Saliya Pieris will share his views with the panel led by Mr Chamind Dias and Co-hosted by Mr Saroj Pathirana and Activist Buwanaka Perera.
What’s Next Sri Lanka is a voluntary independent group of diverse Sri Lankans across all continents committed and united in their values to create awareness and contribute to a safe, transparent, equitable and just Sri Lanka.
