Global Tamil Forum’s Tribute to Late Hon. Mavai Senathirajah
The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) is saddened by the passing of the Senior Tamil leader Mavai Senathirajah and we express our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and to all those who were associated with the departed leader in many different capacities.
For over six decades Mr. Senathirajah was a key figure in the political struggle of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, and throughout this long journey his commitment to their rights, equality and aspirations never wavered.
Mr. Senathirajah’s political involvement was multifaceted and reflected the oppressive conditions Tamil people faced at different times. He was an active participant in many civil disobedience campaigns in the 60s and 70s, and was kept in detention for nearly seven years for political reasons. During the early part of detentions, he endured systemic torture at the hands of the security forces of Sri Lanka. Mr. Senathirajah was always committed to democratic principles, and his political journey continued even during the difficult war period. Mr. Senathirajah was elected as a Member of Parliament five times between 2000 and 2015 representing Tamils from the East and then the North of Sri Lanka. During the last decade (2014-2024) he was the leader of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) rendering his services to party members and faithful.
Mr. Senathirajah was an embodiment of the Tamil resistance to mistreatment and majoritarian oppression, and will be remembered as an ardent advocate for Tamil rights in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Senathirajah’s absence will be keenly felt among the Tamil people living in Sri Lanka and in the Diaspora, and we have no doubt his legacy will continue by all who were touched by his leadership, sacrifices and dedication.
May his soul rest in peace.
